January & February 2024 Volunteer Days @ The Growing Local Gardens

VOLUNTEER NEWS

Each Tuesday we meet up at the site to achieve a number of varying tasks. Our current priorities include constructing pathways and raised beds in the education garden and planting trees in the orchard, we very much look forward to starting the sowing and planting in the CSA gardens soon!

Once the warmer weather begins we plan to start a Saturday volunteer day for those unable to attend on Tuesday, families will be very welcome.

We are on site each Tuesday between 10am and 1pm – No need to book on, just come along on the day. We will supply cake and biscuits and hot drinks. We may from time to time run longer all day sessions – we’ll let you know in advance when these are if you have registered your email address with us. If it’s heavy rain we will cancel the session.

Absolutely no experience is necessary, just come along and muck in – we’ll always have plenty of jobs!. Please note that for the time being we will not have our own toilet facilities on site (we have to construct them first!). We do however have use of the toilets over by the Belmont Wanderers car park – which is where you can park if driving (details below). It’s about a 10 minute walk from the gardens.

If cycling or walking – we are situated at the end of the Great Western Way foot/cycle path, go past the football fields and you will see our fields on either side the path as you head towards Grafton – we are likely to be in the main growing field – field 1 on the map below.

If driving:We are currently able to use the car park of Belmont Wanderers – it is just off Vernons Williams Close in Newton Farm, Hereford (HR2 7BF). Coming from Hereford on the Belmont Road, turn left at the Tesco’s roundabout into Southolme Road. Go over the little roundabout, up the hill, through the chicanes and then turn right onto Vernon Williams Close. Follow the close round to the left and you’ll see the car park at the end.

FUTURE DATES

Tuesday 13th February – please bring along your children in half term week! 10am to 1pm.

Saturday 24th February – we shall be hosting a special tree planting Saturday between 10am to 3pm. We’ll be completing our orchard field, planting fruit trees around the site and planting out hedgerow whips in the new growing areas.

VOLUNTEER WHATS APP GROUP

From time to time there may be short notice volunteer requirements on site so we have set up a What’s App group of people who may be able to help with these ad hoc sessions – if you would like to join the group – please email your number and I’ll add you. Thank you!
